About WHA

Mission

The Wilmington Housing Authority’s mission is to provide well-maintained, decent and safe housing in a professional, efficient and fiscally responsible manner.

Objective

Our goal is to be the premier housing and related services provider in the area. Through determination and hard work, we will reach that goal and make the community we live in better for all of us.

Overview

Established in 1938, one year after the passage of the Housing Act of 1937, the Wilmington Housing Authority (WHA) is the largest provider of low-income housing and housing opportunities in the State of Delaware. With over 2,000 units (both public and private) and 1,450 Section 8 vouchers under our management, WHA provides housing services to nearly 7,000 residents, almost 10% of the population of the City of Wilmington.

Our combined annual budgets exceed $55 million dollars. Primarily funded by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), WHA provides housing opportunities to eligible low-income residents of the City of Wilmington.

WHA offers a wide variety of housing choices, including newly developed homeownership programs. Since 2000, WHA has invested over $10 million in making improvements to our properties, equipment, management systems and personnel, all for the purpose of providing better service to our residents.
